Discover The Culture Of Kendal
What’s the first thing you think of when someone mentions the town of Kendal? For the majority of people it will be Kendal’s famous mint cake, a chocolatey confectionary concoction offering a very distinct peppermint flavour.
More than just mint cake
There’s much more to Kendal though than just mint cake, as tasty as it is.
Labelled the “Gateway to the Lakes”, did you know for instance that a Kendal Post Office provided the inspiration for the Post Office in the Postman Pat series of books or that Kendal has its own equivalent of the Bayeux Tapestry (Quaker Tapestry)?
Visitors to Kendal have plenty to see and do too.
Since 2006, music-lovers have been making an annual pilgrimage to the town’s independent music festival “Kendal Calling”, this year due to be headlined by Catfish and the Bottlemen, Run DMC and the Libertines.
You can also call in at the Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry where you will be taken back in time to learn about the history of the Lake District from the late 18th century onwards.
To keep your hunger and thirst at bay head to Brew Brothers, a shabby chic coffee house that’s highly recommended for all day brunch and great coffee in Kendal. If fine dining is more to your taste, The Castle Dairy Restaurant offers a unique dining experience and is located in Kendal’s oldest inhabited building dating back to the 1500s.
Kendal housing
Some of Kendal’s architectural gems are no more, demolished in favour of new roads and housing developments; however, several impressive feats of architecture remain that you would only normally expect to see in larger towns and cities.
Last year, a typical property in Kendal sold for an average of £204,969.
Many properties in the town are constructed from local grey limestone, which is why Kendal was given the nickname “Auld Grey Town”. It also contains 187 listed buildings that use either blue grey Westmorland roof slates or green coloured slates.
