BIG ENERGY SAVING WEEK – 5 Top Tips On Saving Energy From Planet

Today isn’t just Blue Monday, the day it’s claimed is the most depressing day of the year, it also marks the start of Big Energy Saving Week which continues until Sunday 27th January.

Setup a few years ago by Citizens Advice and run in conjunction with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the purpose of Big Energy Saving Week is to bring attention to the rising cost of household fuel and advise householders how they can cut the cost of their energy bills.

At a time when there are an estimated 2.55 million fuel poor households in England alone, it’s never been more important to highlight how easy it is to save on energy. Our 5 best energy saving tips prove this…

  1. Find a cheaper energy tariff

A record number of people switched energy supplier last year but the Energy Saving Trust recently discovered that nine million households have been on the same energy package for the past six years.

Switching is so simple! Get a copy of your most recent gas and electricity bills, input your usage on a comparison site, take up the cheapest deal and let your new supplier do the rest. A first-time switcher can save £300+ annually.

  1. Fit energy efficient windows & doors

Expensive energy bills could be down to the inability of your existing windows and doors to keep your home well insulated and warm. You may also feel coldness coming through them when you stand nearby.

They need to be exchanged for windows and doors with a high energy rating – Planet supplies replacement windows A+ energy rated as standard, just about the best you can get for thermal performance. A better insulated home will make you far less reliant on your heating.

  1. Make use of your heater’s timer function

There’s no need to leave your heating on when there’s nobody in the house, especially as most heating systems will have a timer option.

Set your heating to come on when you know you are due to get up in the morning or arrive back after work instead of just leaving it on constantly. Also turn off the radiators in any rooms that aren’t used often and keep the heat restricted to those rooms that you regularly frequent.

  1. Stop over charging your devices

We can’t live without our chargers if we want to continue using our mobile devices (phone, laptop, tablet) as they’d just run out of power.

Some of us are guilty of leaving our mobile devices on charge for too long and failing to either hit the ‘off’ switch on the wall or pull the plug out which is damaging for the battery life and your finances. As soon as the battery level hits 100% reach for the ‘off’ switch or remove the plug as it will carry on consuming energy unnecessarily.

  1. Get your boiler serviced

This is something you should ideally have done in the summer as a boiler service can identify potential issues with the boiler that may cause it to breakdown at an inopportune time such as in the middle of a freezing cold winter.

Any engineer that inspects your boiler will also be able to determine whether it is running as efficiently as it can do, and if it isn’t, investment into a new energy efficient boiler is well worth considering as you’ll make big energy savings in the long-term.
