  • The Lake District National Park is England’s largest and it covers 2292 square kilometres, 885 square miles or 566,365.5 square acres.
  • The highest mountain in the Lake District is Scafell Pike which stands at 978 metres or 3210 feet.
  • The largest lake in the Lake District is Lake Windermere which is a staggering 14.8 square kilometres around and is it 10.5 miles long.
  • There’s actually only one lake in the Lake District, Bassenthwaite Lake. The rest are either ‘meres’ or ‘waters’.
  • There are over 6,000 archaeological sites in the park and there are more than 1,700 listed and also historic buildings.

Graphite was discovered in the hills of the Lake District in the 16th century and was used to make pencils and to mark sheep. Today, the Pencil Museum in Keswick attracts over 100,000 visitors a year.
