If you aren’t in the home improvement industry, there’s a good chance you are unaware about the difference between flush casement windows and non-flush casement windows. If you’re thinking of replacing your windows any time soon, it’s important to know.
As you may have guessed, the difference lies in the ‘flush’ feature.
For your information, a casement is the moving part of a window that opens and closes. A flush casement has sashes that sit flat with the window frame.
Also known as ‘lipped’, standard ‘non-flush’ casement windows have sashes that subtly overlap the window frame.
If you are still a little unsure about the difference, it makes sense to plan a trip to Planet’s showroom, located in Kendal.
When did the original flush and non-flush casement windows first become popular?
Flush casement windows can be traced back to the 19th century, over 200 years ago. During that time, all windows were made out of timber.
Thus, a large proportion of properties built in the late Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian times have timber flush windows.
Non-flush casement windows have been around for even longer. They were common in the UK in the 18th century and they still remain Britain’s most popular window style today. In 18th century Britain, they were built from iron by blacksmiths, until timber took over. Nowadays, UPVC and aluminium are the most popular materials.
Why are flush windows so popular again?
Home improvement companies, like Planet, have played a part in reviving the classic flush windows, recommending them for homeowners who prefer windows with a sleek and slender appearance.
We have designed our Envisage flush windows to add a modern twist to the original, timeless flush windows of the 19th century. Our Envisage range is manufactured from UPVC, which still mimics the authentic style, but is much easier to clean and maintain than timber.
Which of them will complement my property?
For homeowners looking to uphold the traditional styling of their home, flush casement windows are the perfect solution.
However, thanks to the adaptability of our Envisage flush casement windows, we assure you they will look just as at home on a new-build as they would on a period property.
Standard casement windows are a solid option for almost every style of home in Cumbria and North Lancashire, which is why they are the number one chosen window style.
Still can’t decide? Head down to our Kendal showroom to speak to our advisors and see the two window styles up close.
